Old encyclopedias needn't be put out to pasture, dumpsterized, or shredded. No! They can be repurposed. In this free workshop we'll first look at a few examples of altered books and book pages. Then we'll work on some pages of our own: altering what's there by removing, changing, and replacing text and illustrations. We'll also discuss ways you can develop projects of integrating your own text with such "public domain" materials as old advertisements, photographs, books, and historical documents. All materials will be provided.

Nance Van Winckel's newest books are Ever Yrs. (Twisted Road Publications, 2014), a novel in the form of a scrapbook and Pacific Walkers (U. of Washington Press, 2013). BOOK OF NO LEDGE, an altered encyclopedia, will appear with Pleiades Press in September 2016. The recipient of two NEA Poetry Fellowships and awards from the Poetry Society of America, Poetry, and Prairie Schooner, she has also published four books of linked stories. She is on the MFA in Writing faculties of Eastern Washington University and Vermont College of Fine Arts.
